Notice to Vacate Letter Format for PG: Samples for Tenant and Owner

These are general samples. Always follow the notice period and terms in your own signed agreement, and check local rules for anything serious.

A notice to vacate is simply a written, dated message that says someone will leave (or is being asked to leave) on a specific date. Putting it in writing protects both sides and makes the deposit settlement much easier.

Tips that make a notice work

  • Use the agreed notice period. Many PGs use 30 days, but yours may differ. Check the agreement.
  • Be specific. Give the exact last day of stay and the reason. Vague notices cause disputes.
  • Deliver it in a way you can prove. Hand over a copy and ask the person to sign "received" with the date, or send it by email or WhatsApp and keep the message.
  • Keep your tone calm. A polite, factual notice is easier to enforce and avoids bad blood.
  • Do not use force. Do not lock a tenant out, cut utilities or remove belongings to make them leave. Follow the process in your agreement and, for serious disputes, take legal advice.

After the notice

  1. Record the move-out date against the tenant, so the bed shows as available from that day.
  2. Do the move-out inspection and settle the deposit. See PG security deposit rules and refund process.
  3. Start marketing the bed early. See how to fill vacant beds.

Frequently asked questions

Is the notice period always 30 days?

No. Use the period in your signed agreement. Many PGs choose 30 days, but it can be shorter or longer.

Is a WhatsApp or email notice valid?

It is useful proof, and many owners accept it if the agreement allows. To be safe, also exchange a signed copy.

What if the tenant leaves without giving notice?

Follow what your agreement says about notice and the deposit, keep a written record, and take legal advice if there is a dispute.
